The Most Dangerous Month for Construction Workers

The dog days of summer bring about extra dangers for construction workers across the country. The summer months already offer a higher incidence of construction injuries, but it appears that the later summer months do the most amount of damage.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII), more work-related injuries occur during the summer months than at other times of the year. The most dangerous month of the year for construction workers, the month when the most injuries are sustained, is in August.

Construction Accident Statistics

OSHA data shows that 4,836 construction workers were killed on the job in 2015. Those numbers break down to 93 deaths per week and 13 deaths every day. That equates to 3.4 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers.  Out of the 4,379 worker deaths in the private sector, in 2015, 937 (21.4%) were construction injuries leading to death.

What Are OSHA’s “Fatal Four” Hazards?

In response to the dangers of construction work, OSHA categories the injury types into four areas dubbed construction’s “Fatal Four” injuries.

These injury categories are:

  • Falls
  • Struck by objects
  • Electrocution
  • And caught-in/between

These “Fatal Four” actions were responsible for almost 65% of construction worker deaths. The first of the “Fatal Four” injuries, falls, are all too common. In fact, OSHA inspectors most frequently cited violations for fall protection deficiencies while touring construction sites.

While OSHA pays close attention to preventing falls on the worksite, fall hazards are often easy to overlook by busy workers. Unfortunately, without proper fall prevention precautions in place, falls can continue to drive up construction accidents throughout the year.

If you work in construction, you already know that workplace safety has improved significantly over the past 40 years. However, there is still a long way to go in order to assure that workers are safe in August and throughout the year.
