In 2025 at O’Brien Law, we have settled two dog attack cases for our clients. This is an ongoing concern for people in Kane County, including in Geneva, St. Charles and Batavia. Dog attacks can happen when you are a guest on somebody else’s property or when you are simply minding your own business on a public sidewalk.
Recent $600,000 Dog Attack Settlement in Maple Park
Earlier this year, we settled a serious dog attack case that occurred when our client was peacefully on a friend’s property in Maple Park. We were able to obtain $600,000 for our client in that case after he was bitten and knocked to the ground, causing him to suffer serious bite wounds and injure his neck badly enough to require cervical fusion surgery.
$250,000 Settlement for a 7-Year-Old Girl Injured on a Public Sidewalk
Recently, we settled another dog attack case for $250,000 for a sweet 7-year-old girl, who was riding her bicycle on a public sidewalk with her father, when a dog unexpectedly lunged at her. She was bitten on the face and arm and has now developed a significant fear of dogs, given this unprovoked attack. She was left with permanent scars on her face and arm.
Illinois Dog Bite Law: Strong Protection for Victims
In Illinois, there is a statute called the Animal Control Act, which provides strong liability in favor of people injured by an animal when they do not provoke the animal. So, there is no requirement to prove that a specific dog ever bit or attacked someone before. As shown here, the injuries can be significant and permanent.
